Did you know that painting is one of the least expensive and quickest ways to dramatically change the appearance of your home?
Total Home Improvement & Repair, LLC only uses top quality interior and exterior paints to ensure long lasting results. We take every step necessary to ensure the final result is of the best quality because we want the final result to be just as spectacular as you do. Because the walls and ceiling of your house take up approximately 85% of the visual space, it is now wonder painting a room can make such a dramatic change. The cost of a gallon of paint is so much less than a piece of furniture or new floor covering yet covers so much more space, it is easy to see why it is such a cost effective way to redecorate.
Maintaining the exterior appearance of your home is more important than you may think!
Did you know that painting the exterior of your house not only gives your home a new clean look, but it also protects the your home from the exterior elements such as rain and snow. Without paint, the exterior of wood windows, the trim surrounding windows and doors and the soffit and fascias would begin to rot and deteriorate within 1 year. Depending on the elements surrounding your house (sun exposure, shade, wind, moisture), you should consider painting the exterior of your house every 4-7 years.
Is there a difference between paints?
Yes! There are so many differences between high quality and low quality paint it could fill a book, but a few of the major differences are pigments, binders and additives. There is a brief description below to help you understand why it is important to choose a good quality paint.
Cheap paints have a higher percentage of solvents per volume. As a result there is less PIGMENT(also known as solids) in the gallon of cheap paint than high quality paint which can have 50% more pigment than the cheap stuff. What this means is that most of what you are applying with cheap paint is water or mineral spirits (solvents up to 70%) which will evaporate and leave little pigment behind. This is why you have to re-coat and re-coat with low quality paint before enough pigment is left behind to cover the color underneath. The pigment or solids is ultimately the color and the protection that is left on the material that was painted, the more solids left behind, the longer the paintjob will last.
BINDERS are responsible for quite a bit of the paints behavior, but all you really need to know is that it is also responsible for the adhesion of the pain. The better the adhesion, the less of a chance you will have of the paint flaking off. Enough said.
There are many different types of ADDITIVES that can be added to paint to produce different effects from the product. Besides glazes and other finishing effects, most of these additives are for exterior paints. The 2 most important you should be aware of are UV stabilizers and Biocides. UV stabilizers prevent the paint from deteriorating in direct sunlight. UV damage causes the paint to breakdown, eventually becoming brittle and flaking away, resulting in the need to repaint earlier than would have otherwise been necessary. Biocides are added to prevent the growth of bacterial and fungal growth which is very important for all exterior paints and interior paints used in humid spaces such as bathrooms.
So if you want a good looking and long lasting finish, a high quality paint is a must.
Is there a difference between painting companies?
Absolutely! The final results of your painting project are a direct result of the company you choose to perform the task. You always want a knowledgeable company who is focused on quality results, like Total Home Improvement & Repair, LLC. Price is not always the best indicator of the results you will receive. There are many companies that try to be the cheapest and do so by using the least expensive and usually the lowest quality materials while taking short cuts to finish the work faster. We never sacrifice quality. Remember, you get what you pay for. If you want a good quality, long lasting result, you need to hire a company that knows what they are doing, which may or may not be the cheapest. So, to be sure you are getting what you are paying for, here is what you are getting with the services we provide.
Exterior Painting Process:
1. We begin by applying a cleaning solution to the surface that removes contaminants such as: dirt, mildew, mold spores and grey wood fibers. A clean surface is vitally important for the adhesion of the new coating. If the surface is not clean, the new coating could begin to fail within a few months.
2. Next we power wash the entire project with low pressure to prevent damaging the surface and rinse the surrounding areas to neutralize the cleaning solution. Low pressure power washing ensures a completely clean surface without damaging the wood.
3. Then, if necessary, the wood is treated with a wood brightener which brightens discolored areas in preparation for lighter stains/sealers. This step is excluded if we are applying a paint or solid color stain.
4. After that, the wood must dry until it reaches a moisture content of 18% or less. To ensure this, we use a sophisticated moisture meter which electronically reads the moisture content of the wood.
5. Finally, we apply the paint or stain by roller, to the surfaces to ensure maximum penetration and covering. We never spray the paint/stain/sealer to ensure a deep, even penetration into the pores of the wood. This step may be repeated to achieve the desired thickness of the final coat.
Interior Painting Process:
1. We begin by putting down drop clothes to protect your floors.
2. We patch nail holes and repair any damaged areas of the walls which we will be painting.
3. We sand the patches and any other areas where it may be necessary.
4. Priming may be necessary depending on the type of paint or finish that is required.
5. We paint the walls carefully and meticulously using the proper length napped roller and additives to achieve outstanding results.
6. We allow the paint to dry so we can look over our work to make sure we did not miss any spots and the results are outstanding.
7. We take our time to clean the work area.
Decks and outdoor structures:
We also offer cleaning and sealing of decks and other outdoor structure. When staining and sealing decks, we use Sikkens products because we have done the research and have found them to be among the best quality in the industry. We are a Sikkens certified company which means we have been educated and tested on our knowledge. We have been trained to follow a strict process to ensure long lasting results.
