Bathrooms have often been called the second most humid place on earth. Coming in a close second, right behind the rainforest.  With conditions being as harsh as they are, proper ventilation is a necessity.  The Home Ventilation Institute recommends that bathrooms maintain an air exchange rate of 8. Meaning that the air in the bathroom should be replaced 8 times per hour.  In order for this to happen, the exhaust fan that is installed must be able to move that many cubic feet per minute (CFM).  An easy calculation to help you choose an exhaust fan with the proper CFM required for your bathroom, is to find the square footage of the room.  Beyond that it is also recommended that you then add 50 for a shower/bath, and 50 for a toilet.  This means a standard 5' X 8' bathroom needs at least a 40 CFM exhaust fan, but it is strongly recommended that you install a 140 CFM to give the room proper ventilation.  You will also see Sones in the description of each exhaust fan.  The lower the number of Sones, the quieter the exhaust fan will be.

Total Home Improvement & Repair, LLC take even further precautions such as measuring the distance under the door to make sure there is enough space to allow the exhaust fan to pull in fresh air.  We also recommend installing a designated air cap for the exhaust fan with rigid aluminum ducting.
